Wellness Specialist

Duties and Salary:
The main duties of a wellness specialist are to educate the public on how to improve their daily choices, prevent illness or access local resources. The method should be customized to the audience. For example, a wellness specialist working for a company may hold a seminar and make break room posters on preventative care, ergonomic seating, and the importance of exercise to productivity and motivation. Beyond this direct outreach, a wellness specialist may advise employers on the best insurance provider to meet employee needs. When working for the city, a specialist may focus on a larger array of concerns from local outdoor exercise options to diabetes care facilities in the area.

Salary:
$29,202

Education:
Each employer mandates different educational requirements, but many require at least a bachelor’s degree in health education or a related degree field, like community health or health and human services. Because a wellness specialist interacts with people on a daily basis, she should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, be well organized, able to multitask and willing to work with people of all backgrounds. She should be able to problem solve and offer effective and flexible solutions.

Demands:

Light physical effort; routine handling of heavy objects up to 20 pounds or prolonged standing, keyboard, or CRT work (e.g. at least 50% of time).
